Holistic Health Coach Journey

In January 2019, I started studying with the Institute of Integrative Nutrition (IIN) to become a Holistic Health Coach.

I've always been interested in how the food that we eat can affect our mood, energy levels, skin, hair and overall health. As a child I suffered from eczema which was mostly caused by artificial colours, flavours and sweeteners - I soon learned that consuming Party Rings, Haribo and Panda Pops at a friend's birthday party wasn't worth an uncomfortable and itchy aftermath!

In my teens and twenties I went on to devour health and fitness magazines, healthy lifestyle blogs and spend money in Wholefoods on juices, chia seeds and vitamins, chasing that elusive "healthy glow" while also being influenced by whatever diet I read about in the Sunday Times Style supplement. To the dismay of my Persian father, rice (and all other carbs) were suddenly the root of all evil and I once tried to follow a diet which involved eating a fingernail-sized piece of red pepper and cucumber at half-hourly intervals...

In my mid-twenties, I was working long hours as a corporate lawyer in London and later in Dubai. I had zero time or inclination to cook at home, drank around five cans of Diet Coke each day just to be able to continue staring at my screen and, no matter how many salads I ate, vitamin pills I popped or new "superfood ingredients' I emptied my wallet for, I still didn't feel particularly great healthy. My free time was either spent running marathons, writing what at the time was a fashion / lifestyle blog, maintaining a social life, attending four spin classes per week and then drinking my body weight in G&Ts on a Friday evening, only to repeat the same pattern the following week. My diary might have looked like my life was in balance, but it didn't feel that way.

Since quitting my legal job in early 2018, I've freed up a lot of mental space and want to learn more about the food I'm eating, the marketing messages we are bombarded with and how to help myself and those around me to make better choices, without giving up our social lives or our sanity. I think we all deserve, however busy our jobs or lives are, to feel our absolute best, to avoid those dreaded 4pm slumps and to still have the occasional G&T or dessert without judgement or fear.

Going back to school full time to study nutrition wasn't an option for me - I'm living in one of the world's most expensive cities, still have a 9-5 office job to pay the bills and a mortgage to pay back in London. Studying online during the evenings and at weekends is a great way for me to learn something new while keeping my life and finances in balance.

I'll be sharing my journey with IIN on my blog as I go through the course. After many years of working in a field that I no longer felt inspired by, it feels SO good to be devoting time and energy to learning about something I find truly fascinating.
